Music
Music at First
Martin Luther was not only a theologian and rabble-rouser, but a musician and composer, as well. He wrote many hymns, including everybody's favorite Reformation Day classic, "A Mighty Fortress." Here are a few of his thoughts on the gift of music:
Music is one of the loveliest and most glorious gifts of God. Satan hates it because it has great power to dispel temptations and evil thoughts.
Music is the best balm for a sad heart, for it restores contentment and quickens and refreshes the heart.
Music is a glorious gift of God, very like to theology. I would not part with my little gifts of music for anything in the world. We ought to teach the young this art, for it makes fine and clever people.
Musical life at First Lutheran includes uplifting settings of the liturgy, traditional Lutheran hymns and melodic, more modern hymns, the bell choir and our regular choir at the 10:30 services, along with special music concerts on Sunday afternoons from time to time. The choir rehearses every week after the 10:30 a.m. service, and at 10:00 a.m. before each service for warm-up.
